Where the primer opens a door, this course walks through it. Moving across centuries and traditions, it traces the major currents of Western mysticism from the early Christian desert fathers through the medieval flowering of mystical theology to the twentieth century, with consistent attention to a single question: what did these men and women understand the contemplative life to actually demand of a life?

The Islamic and Judaic mystical traditions are woven throughout, not as footnotes but as distinct and serious voices within the same inheritance. Rigorous in content, practical in orientation.
